News/Content Director Kate Czaplinski hosts both HAN’s weekday news show, Coffee Break, and CT Pulse on Wednesdays.

News/Content Director Kate Czaplinski hosts both HAN’s weekday news show, Coffee Break, and CT Pulse on Wednesdays.

HAN Network will surpass 3 million online viewers before it reaches its two-year anniversary this August.

HAN’s online viewership does not include the network’s cable audience in 200,000 Connecticut households via Frontier Communications.

“Our combination of local news, entertainment and sports programming is clearly resonating  with area viewers,” said HAN Network CEO Martin Hersam.

“No other media firm in our market area is doing what we do — which is provide original, local broadcast programming which cannot be found anywhere else,” Hersam said. “Viewers are responding with a high level of engagement.”

The network has integrated the power of its talented staff, 12 local newspapers and websites into regular daily and weekly programming focused on southwestern Connecticut.

“We have built-in content that translates easily from all of our platforms right into television,” Hersam said.

In addition to FCIAC sports, HAN Network’s regular shows include:

  • Coffee Break, southwestern Connecticut news covered by the community journalists of the HAN Network and hosted/produced by Kate Czaplinski, every Monday through Friday at 11 a.m.;
  • Nutmeg Sports, talk and analysis of sports throughout Southwestern Connecticut with Frank Granito and Kevin Coleman, Monday through Thursday at 2 p.m.;
  • CT Pulse, a look behind the news and Connecticut politics with Kate Czaplinski, Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m.;
  • Yankee Fisherman, coverage of angling and related news in southwestern Connecticut and beyond with John Kovach, Thursdays at 1 p.m.;
  • The Drive, motivational talk and inspirational local interviews with Denise DiGrigoli, Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m.; to see the schedule visit live.han.network/schedule

HAN is also working with local organizations and businesses to create custom broadcast programs that the client can use to educate potential customers as well as our viewers. In May, HAN and Silver Hill Hospital launched “Straight Talk with Tracey,” a show that focuses on topics around mental health and addiction. Straight Talk airs the second Thursday of each month, at noon.

“Local marketers are able to reach one of the most affluent audiences in the nation — and hold their attention during our commercial breaks. There is no other local marketing platform that provides this kind of access,” Hersam said.

There are a few different ways you can watch the HAN Network:

Mobile: Watch local news, games, politics and entertainment programming on your iPhone or Android phone with the HAN Network. Download it here.

Online: All HAN Network broadcasts are available live at HAN.Network and our affiliate websites, including FCIAC.net and all the other HAN Network local news websites.

On TV: All Frontier Communications subscribers in Connecticut can watch the simulcast of most HAN Network Connecticut sports broadcasts on the Vantage Sports Network at Channels 600 and 1600-HD.

On your Smart TV: It’s easy to watch HAN Network broadcasts on your smart televisions or with Apple TV, Roku (search for Hersam Acorn on Roku’s YouTube channel) or Google’s Chromecast.

Man charged with assault, kidnapping ex-girlfriend

A Stratford man has been charged with felony kidnapping and other crimes after an alleged domestic violence incident in Trumbull.

David Gonzalez, 24, of Success Avenue, Stratford, has been arrested on a warrant by Trumbull Police for numerous domestic violence charges stemming from an incident June 11 with his ex-girlfriend.

The 21-year-old victim told police that her car had broken down on Quarry Road in Trumbull. She called Gonzalez (whom police learned she had a protective order against from a December 2016 incident) to help her but when he arrived, he allegedly became angry after seeing evidence on her phone of conversations with another man.

Gonzalez reportedly took the woman’s keys and phone from her. The victim said she entered Gonzalez’s car to attempt to retrieve them, but Gonzalez began to punch her and began driving away with her in the car. Gonzalez prevented the victim from escaping while he drove to downtown Bridgeport.

The victim told police that during the time she was in the car with him, Gonzalez punched her many times in the face and body, struck her on her ankle with a wrench to prevent her from running away and wrapped an electrical cord around her neck and strangled her, until she struck and clawed at his face to make him stop. Gonzalez eventually pushed the victim out of his car near Golden Hill Street in Bridgeport. Police said the victim had visible injuries consistent with her statement.

On June 21, police located Gonzalez at his place of work and arrested him. He was charged with first-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault, second-degree strangulation, criminal violation of a protective order, and disorderly conduct. He was held on a $250,000 bond with a court date of June 22.

On Wednesday, June 28, at 3 p.m. the ‘Pinta’ and the ‘Nina,’ replicas of Columbus’ ships, will arrive in Bridgeport. The ships will be docked at Captain’s Cove Seaport on Bostwick Avenue, 1 Bostwick Avenue, Bridgeport until their departure early Wednesday morning July 5.

The ships will be open to the general public on Thursday, June 29.

The Nina was built by hand and without the use of power tools and is considered to be the most historically correct Columbus Replica ever built. The ‘Pinta’ recently was built in Brazil and is a larger version of the archetypal caravel. Historians consider the caravel the Space Shuttle of the fifteenth century.

While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for a walk-aboard, self-guided tour. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $6 for students 5-16. Children 4 and under are free. The ships are open everyday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. No reservations are required.

Teachers or organizations wishing to schedule a 30 minute guided tour with a crew member should call 787-672-2152 or visit ninapinta.org, click on ‘Take a Tour’ and fill out online form. Minimum of 15, $5 per person; no maximum. Email columfnd1492@gmail.com.

Stratford’s Square One Theatre Company concluded its 27th anniversary season with the annual presentation of its Subscriber Awards. The awards were selected by the theatre’s nearly 1,000 subscribers who voted for performers in various acting categories from the company’s three-play, 2016-17 season. This was the second year for the theatre’s new space onstage at Stratford Academy.

Square One’s production of Christian O’Reilly’s, Chapatti last March won two awards including Outstanding Production. It also was cited for Outstanding Actor for Al Kulcsar of Fairfield, playing a lonely Irishman resisting the opportunity to fall in love. Kulcsar is the top winner thus far with this most recent award being his eighth. He also won last season for his role in The Outgoing Tide and previously for The Shop at Sly Corner, Freud’s Last Session and Southern Comforts among others. Familiar actors who also repeated wins in the Outstanding Featured Actor and Actress categories Pat Leo of Monroe and Peggy Nelson of Hamden were cited for their roles as the President and First Lady in Square One’s fall production of the political drama, Now or Later by Christopher Shinn.

Named Outstanding Actress was Alice McMahon of Ridgefield, for her starring role in Mark St. Germain’s Becoming Dr. Ruth. The one-woman play about America’s foremost sex therapist closed Square One’s season last month. McMahon has won previously for her roles in Southern Comforts and Not Waving at the theatre.

Square One’s 28th anniversary season will open with Steven Levenson’s workplace comedy, Core Values, on Nov. 2. For more information call 203-375-8778 or visit squareonetheatre.com.

Stratford Library

The Stratford Library and Square One Theatre Company continues Readers Theatre Summer Showcase 2017, the annual series of live, staged readings of new plays, with Wendy MacLeod’s new contemporary play, Things Being What They Are on Thursday, June 29, at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. No reservations will be taken. The theatre reading, which is the fourth of seven scheduled readings in the play series, is free and open to the public.

As Bill anxiously waits for his unfaithful wife and his furniture, he is visited by Jack, a divorced neighbor who suggest the loneliness of life after marriage. At first Jack appears to be a nightmare neighbor, but gradually Bill’s perception of his new “friend” deepens. Things Being What They Are is a serious comedy about middle-aged male angst that is by turns acid, tender and funny in a way that proceeds powerfully from character and context.

Taking part in the library reading are Christopher Finch of Bridgeport and Bruce Murray of Stratford. Tom Holehan of Stratford, artistic director of Square One, will stage the reading.

For more information, call the 203-385-4162.

CT’s Beardsley Zoo hosts Canada Lynx kittens gender reveal

$

Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo will celebrate their new Canada lynx kittens born in April with a “gender announcement” on Thursday, June 29, at 11 a.m. Guests may donate $2 at the front gate to receive a scratch ticket which reveals the kittens’ genders. $5 will purchase a “Team Boy” or “Team Girl” bracelet; $10 will purchase a pair of “Team Boy” or “Team Girl” sunglasses.

The gender reveal will take place in front of the lynx exhibit. Staff and guests will celebrate together. There also will be an enrichment activity provided for the adult male lynx: when he begins to play with a paper mache rabbit, there will be streamers inside to inform him of the gender of his offspring.

The lynx kittens have been offered the opportunity to explore their exhibit, but mom is very protective and they haven’t made their first foray outside yet. Stay tuned — it may be any day. Part of the Zoo’s focus on animal welfare places the choice with the animals, particularly the lynx mother.

About the Canada Lynx

Lynx are light brown to gray in color, similar in appearance to a Bobcat but larger, with longer legs. The tip of their tail is black, and they have long black ear tufts, giving them their distinctive appearance. Lynx lead a solitary life except during breeding season and when mothers travel with their young. Females give birth to between one-five young after a 60-74 day gestation period. Called either cubs or kittens, the young are weaned in two-five months. Lynx kittens learn to actively hunt snowshoe hares, red squirrels, and grouse by the time they are eight months old. Adult lynx are exceptional stalkers, silently ambushing prey once in striking distance.

Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo

Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo, 1875 Noble Avenue, Bridgeport is open daily from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Adult admission (ages 12 & older) is $15, children (ages 3 -11) is $12, senior admission (62 and older) is just $11, and children under 3 years old are free. Zoo members also are admitted free. Parking at the Zoo is free of charge.

Stratford Parents’ Place (SPP) recently celebrated another successful year of its Family, Friends and Neighbors program. Providers who attended this year’s celebration were treated to dessert and a raffle for toys and baby equipment, many of which were donated to Parents’ Place through the Junior Women’s League of Stratford and families who support the center’s mission.

The Family, Friends and Neighbors program supports Stratford home-based child care providers. Funding is provided by the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County. The program offers a lending library of learning bags, ongoing provider outreach and support by a certified parent educator, a home visiting program focusing on child development information, and monthly provider/child activity sessions held at Parents’ Place.

The providers also are able to participate in Stratford Parents’ Place Early Childhood Institute workshops and training. These trainings support quality child care and education of preschoolers and include topics specific to Connecticut’s Early Learning and Development Standards, (CT ELDS).

Lillian, a Stratford home-based childcare provider said that with the help of Stratford Parents’ Place, and learning more about the CT ELDS, she has been able to “Make many improvements and has learned so much.”

Stratford Parents’ Place, a family resource center, located at Stratford Academy/Johnson House, 719 Birdseye Street is a program of the Stratford Public Schools. All programs and services are for Stratford residents. For more information about this program, call Migda Carrero, Stratford Parents’ Place at 203-381-6992 or carrerom@stratfordk12.org.

On Thursday, June 22, Sterling House Community Center hosted more than 300 future campers, family members, staff and friends for its Summer Day Camp Ice Cream Social on the front lawn of the former Sterling family mansion.

Board members, staff, volunteers and friends of Sterling House scooped hundreds of chocolate and vanilla ice cream cups, thanks to support from Goody Bassett’s Ice Cream Shoppe.

Children in attendance enjoyed the playground and open lawns.

The occasion was the kick-off of Sterling House’s 76th annual Summer Day Camp program, which officially began the following Monday, June 26.

According to Amanda Meeson, executive director at Sterling House, the Ice Cream Social was a way to welcome families to the house, introduce them to the camp staff and give the campers an opportunity to make new friends.

“The first day of camp can be overwhelming for many and especially first-time campers.

“We thought an ice cream social would be a fun way to support that transition and we are thrilled so many families came out to join us.

Camp Director Priscilla Choquette, Meeson and camp staff took turns talking to parents about the structure and activities at camp while counselors took the lead and facilitated games with their new campers.

There are still openings in a few age groups for Sessions 2, 3 and 4 of camp and wait lists have been started for all the groups that are full.

If interested, find more information at sterlinghousecc.org, or call 203-378-2606, ext. 100.

Connecticut Audubon names new executive director

The Connecticut Audubon Society has named Patrick Comins, a leading authority on the conservation of the state’s birds and the habitats that support them, as its executive director.

Comins will lead the organization as it focuses on inspiring an ever-greater spirit of conservation statewide, through its education programs, citizen science initiatives, and habitat improvement projects, and at its seven centers and 20 sanctuaries, including the Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center in Milford.

Known for his abiding passion for birds and the environment, Comins started his career by conducting bird surveys for the Connecticut Audubon Society, and is currently director of bird conservation for Audubon Connecticut, the state office of the National Audubon Society. (The Connecticut Audubon Society, founded in 1898, is an independent organization that predates the formation of the National Audubon Society.)

He will begin his new position on July 17, replacing Nelson North, who is retiring after 10 years as director of Fairfield operations and executive director.

“Our goal was to find an executive director with an impeccable record of success as a conservationist and a reputation for integrity and leadership throughout the state – and we are confident that we found him in Patrick Comins,” said Peter Kunkel, chairman of Connecticut Audubon’s Board of Directors.

“Our members and the conservation community at large can be assured that with Patrick leading the organization we will build on the record of success that started when Mabel Osgood Wright founded Connecticut Audubon 119 years ago.”

Comins said he would focus on working with the board, and with the organization’s members, staff and large network of grassroots volunteers, to continue Wright’s vision of inspiring people to conserve by connecting with the natural world.

The Connecticut Audubon Society is based in Fairfield, has a staff of approximately 30 employees in Milford, Old Lyme, Glastonbury, Pomfret, and Sherman, and at its EcoTravel program based in Essex. The organization’s award-winning Science in Nature outdoor education program teaches basic conservation science to almost 20,000 students a year. Its Osprey Nation program uses 200-plus volunteers to compile and analyze data on more than 300 active osprey nests in the state.

“It is humbling to walk in the footsteps of Mabel Osgood Wright, one of the giants of the early bird conservation movement,” Comins said. “I intend to keep her original vision of ‘inspiring people to conserve nature’ as a key tenet as we refine a vision for 21st century conservation at the Connecticut Audubon Society.”

Comins is a graduate of Trinity College in Hartford and a resident of Meriden. He is a past president of the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA) and was the 2007 recipient of its Mabel Osgood Wright Award and 2017 President’s Award. He has written several articles on bird conservation and identification for the COA’s quarterly journal, The Connecticut Warbler.

He has also been a regular contributor to Connecticut Audubon’s annual Connecticut State of the Birds report.

Comins said he intends to follow the same collaborative approach to bird conservation that has allowed him to play a key role in the conservation of more than 2,000 acres of critical bird habitats in Connecticut and more than 4,000 acres of key habitats in the Connecticut River watershed for the Silvio O. Conte National Wildlife Refuge.

Important projects he has worked on in include the protection of the former Griswold Airport property in Madison and the Preserve in Old Saybrook; additions to the Salt Meadow Unit of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge and Menunketesuck Island in Westbrook; additions to the Barn Island Wildlife Management Area in Stonington; and the protection of the Guilford Sluice property and Salt Meadows Park in Guilford.

Comins said he would continue to work in cooperation with Audubon Connecticut on the Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds and other projects.

Audubon Connecticut Executive Director Stewart Hudson said, “On behalf of the staff and board of Audubon Connecticut and the National Audubon Society, we owe a big debt of gratitude to Patrick for the extraordinary accomplishments that he has led on behalf of birds, other wildlife, and people in our state.  There is not a part of Connecticut that has not been touched by his vision, compassion, bird knowledge, and hard work. We are disappointed that he is leaving, but heartened by the fact that he is not going far. The good news is that we can continue to work with Patrick on these issues in the years to come. We wish him the best in his new position.”
