As families gather around dinner tables this Thanksgiving, many Stratford residents will have plenty to be thankful for.

Count Michelle Romero among the very thankful.

The prospect of paying thousands of dollars to fix her home’s roof had her nervous and worried. Instead, staff members from the Home Depot performed the necessary repairs and then some for the U.S. Army veteran, leaving her relieved and appreciative.

“It’s good to know that you’re cared for,” she said.

In January, Romero had received a letter from her insurance company that repairs were needed on the roof and driveway of her Boswell Street home in order for the coverage to continue. Even though there was no leaking or other problems with the roof, she was told it had to be done.

Romero, 33, began searching for quotes to get the work done. She visited the Home Depot to speak with its staff about the cost of doing the work, but she had a feeling she would not be able to afford it. Romero said she had been denied a store charge card and another program to finance the repairs. The roof repair would have cost Romero nearly $5,000.

That’s when Bryan Rodriguez and the Home Depot staff stepped in.

Rodriguez, an assistant store manager, and some staff members visited her home to assess how much the work would cost. They later worked it out so that they could make the roof repairs at no charge to Romero.

The Home Depot does work nationwide with veterans, Rodriguez said, and local stores usually do a major project every three months for veterans, veterans groups and not-for-profit organizations. Some of their most recent work includes repainting walls at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9460 headquarters, located across Barnum Avenue from Stratford’s Home Depot. The local store also volunteered time and materials for a community garden at Honeyspot House.

So it was good to step in to assist Romero, who joined the Army National Guard after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and served in Afghanistan from August 2012 to August 2013.

The work was completed by certified installers, Rodriguez said. Materials were paid for through a non-profit foundation, and store associates volunteered their time.

“Basically [the veterans] are defending our freedom. We formed a connection [with Michelle] and we put ourselves in her shoes,” Rodriguez said.

The Home Depot staff didn’t stop with the roof. They also volunteered to make some interior repairs, including adding crown molding to the kitchen, putting a new filter in her home’s furnace, removing rugs from the stairs and replacing them with laminate treads, and adding frames for doors for the bedrooms of Romero’s sons, Justin, 12, and Jaden 8 . Romero said the boys had to get used to having doors for their rooms, but they enjoy closing them to muffle mom’s voice when she calls for them.

“They like having their doors. Before I could yell for them, but now I can’t do that,” Romero says with a chuckle.

Rodriguez says it’s nice to see Romero getting some needed improvements for her abode.

“For me, personally, it feels awesome,” Rodriguez said of the project. “As one of the leaders in the store, great to show other people in the store this is what Home Depot has to offer and that it’s a great company.”

Romero has profusely thanked the Home Depot employees for the work and said it showed her that people value her and what she’s done.

“It gets me emotional,” she said.

Rodriguez was happy to do the work and noted Romero’s appreciation.

“She hasn’t stopped [talking about it],” Rodriguez said. “She couldn’t stop talking to us and she cooked for us. It made us feel very good and made us feel like family.”
Perhaps family enough to invite some guys in orange over for some Thanksgiving turkey. Romero says she plans to text The Home Depot guys to stop by on Thursday.

Make-A-Wish Connecticut celebrated 30 years of wishes come true at their annual Celebrating Wishes Ball on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Greenwich Country Club. The annual dinner, dance and auction raised more than $550,000 this year, which will go towards granting the wishes of Connecticut children with life-threatening medical conditions

In their 30 years of existence, Make-A-Wish Connecticut has granted more than 2,700 wishes for local children.

John Crowley, a Wish Dad, former National Board Chair and the inspiration for the film Extraordinary Measures, was the special guest of the event and began the evening’s program with a speech about his family’s journey and the impact of a wish. Following his speech, Pam Keough, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish Connecticut thanked everyone for coming and helping the event be so successful.

Event emcees Michael Kay of the YES Network and Jodi Applegate introduced nearly a dozen Wish Kids to the 400 guests in attendance. The “Wish Ambassadors” had their wishes granted over the past year and joined guests to share their unique stories throughout the evening.

Two particular Wish Kids were honored at the 30th Anniversary celebration this year: 6-year-old Quinn, who wished to go to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, and 10-year-old Connor, who wished to go on a Mediterranean cruise. Quinn and Connor shared their stories of how their wishes gave them hope, strength and joy to continue to fight their conditions.

The event’s co-chairs Brooke and Nicholas Bohnsack, Gina and John Filippelli, Sharon and David Platter and Julie and John Rivard served as leaders of a team of volunteers.

Stratford polling place to undergo audit

One Stratford polling place will be subject to an audit following the Nov. 8 general election.

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill announced last week that 5% of the state’s polling locations were randomly selected to have their primary results audited following the election.

Franklin Elementary School was listed among the 38 primary locations for auditing. Nichols Elementary School was chosen as one of the 31 alternate locations.

The audit will involve comparing a hand count of all the votes at Franklin Elementary School in the races for president and vice president, U.S. Senate and the 3rd U.S. House District with those counted by the machine at the polling station, said Rick Marcone, Stratford’s Democratic registrar of voters.

“I think it’s a good thing because it puts peoples’ minds at ease that the machines are working well,” said Marcone. “It’s time consuming, but it’s worth giving people the piece of mind that their voting equipment is accurate.”

Marcone and Republican Registrar Lou DeCilio will count the votes cast at Franklin at 9 a.m Wednesday at Town Hall.

“Connecticut should be proud to have some of the most stringent audit laws in the country. In an election year that saw various entities attempt to sow the seeds of doubt in the process, this state can be assured that all possible safeguards are in place to count every vote,” Merrill said in a statement. “Whether it is Election Day Registration, online voter registration or our meticulous audit process, the rights of the voter are our highest priority in Connecticut.”

The results of audits will be analyzed by the University of Connecticut, the Secretary of the State’s Office and the State Elections Enforcement Commission, and then be made available to the public.

Nonprofit seeks stories about holiday volunteer traditions

Fairfield County nonprofit, Volunteer Square, has launched a new campaign to collect stories from the community about holiday volunteer traditions. The campaign seeks to inspire and celebrate volunteers in Connecticut while donating the gift of time to local nonprofits in need.

SHARE your holiday volunteer tradition with us and we’ll GIVE an hour to a nonprofit in need is the campaign tagline. During the season of giving, the Volunteer Square team is asking people to share a volunteer tradition they have during the holiday season and why it’s important to them. For every story submitted, they will pay it forward by giving one hour of service to a nonprofit in need. All hours will be completed after Jan. 1, 2017.

Accepted submissions will be posted live on VolunteerSquare.com as inspiration for those looking to start their own holiday volunteer tradition and to celebrate the outstanding service of volunteers as 2016 comes to a close.

Submissions will be accepted through Tuesday, Dec. 13. To submit a story, visit VolunteerSquare.com or post on the Volunteer Square Facebook page. Photos also are encouraged.

“This is a chance to showcase all the wonderful volunteering happening during the holiday season and for our team to have the opportunity to get out into the community in 2017 and volunteer for our partner agencies,” said Julianne Alberty, Volunteer Square executive director.

For more information about this campaign or other ways to get involved in the community visit VolunteerSquare.com.
